Q: I'm looking for a recreational pair of snowshoes and am utterly lost in my attempt to buy a pair. What are the key factors in making a decision? Any recommendations?
A: I don't know what Derek is talking about, but I've never gotten a blister from snowshoes. I've gotten them from poorly fitted boots, but not from the actual snowshoes.
The first thing to consider is your weight (or the total weight of you
I am in the market for a pair of snowshoes. I am planning on hiking up Mt. Marcy in New York on Jan. 9th and probably staying two nights up there. I am a 170 lb. male about 6'3" I am looking to spend no more than $150.00 on a nice pair of snowshoes.
Snowshoes….hands down.
Even on the widest XC skis (using climbing skins too) if it really steep, you’ll have to boot it up. (been there…done that. It sucks.)
It’s not uncommon for me to get 3/4 up a mountain and realize my skins aren’t working anymore…so out come the snowshoes I’ve been toting around on my backpack. Swap out the ski…strap on the snowshoes…and up to the top I go.
If I am not planning to ski back down the mountain I don’t take the skis. So for big hikes or stuff I know I’m not going to get down on planks…I skip the lumber all together.
I have yet to find someplace I can’t get up with snowshoes.
I want to buy my snowshoes. How important is it for a woman to have womens snowshoes? Do they make a big difference?
