Q: I know that most are reversible, it just doesn't make sense to me. Also some of the cheaper spincasters don't have reversible retrieve cranks.
A: I would think its because most people that fish for bass use right handed reels but personally I switch the handle 2 the other side cause I'm a lefty =)

This should be a perfect kid's rod - my grandson is 5 and we took him fishing for the first time last week - the rod was a perfect size for him and he managed the casting and reeling in just perfectly - - however - after about 8 casts - he was no longer able to reel in the line -it just sat there no matter how he cranked in the reel - all of the adults tried to fix the rod - - to no avail - - there were no backlashes on the line - nothing - it just broke - - fortunately we were able to get him a regular adult rod that he could manage and he caught his first fish - a rainbow trout!

Perfect for the little girl "fisherman"
I bought this for my granddaughter so that she could go fishing with daddy. The set arrived quickly in perfect condition. My granddaughter practiced and practiced her casting and then did go fishing with daddy. Unfortunately she didn't catch anything but the rod and reel are very cute, sturdy....perhaps the next time they go fishing she'll get the "catch of the day."
Shakespeare Fishing Pole
This fishing pole was a gift, the second Shakespear fishing pole we have purchased, one for our first granddaughter (which has caught many trout in Vermont) and now one for our second granddaughter. Although we have no history with this particular purchase, we have no reason to think that it will not perform as expected. A Piece of JunkI had a couple of Zebco spincast rods and reels similar to this when I was a kid. They were generally reliable, so I thought one of these would make a good first rod for my 5 year old daughter. But I picked this model up for her last weekend and it just doesn't work. Sometimes it will cast as far as 4 or 5 feet. Most of the time it locks up and does nothing at all, even though I am operating the thing properly.
This reel is unfortunately a completely piece of junk. Literally, you'd be better off tying some line to a flexible stick.
