I had the same thought and their are only a few minor differences. The first being the poles. Believe it or not if a tent has fiberglass poles it is probably a 3 season tent, reason being that fiberglass can easily crack in the cold...the fourth season.
Tents are commonly used by campers. They are practical as they are portable. They hardly impact the environment which is necessary when one camps in the wilderness. There are different kinds of tents available according to the climate. There is the one-season tent used in summer. This tent can withstand light summer rains. The three-season tent can withstand heavy rains and light snow. This can be used in spring, summer and autumn. The three-season tents can offer you ventilation and protection from insects, moderate rain and wind. But they will not be able to withstand heavy snow.
The four season tents are suited for winter and its snow. But this is not suited for summer as its ventilation is poor. The four season tents are also heavier. Removal of a pole section or unzipping a roof panel can convert the four season tent to a three season tent. Severe climatic conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain and heavy snow fall can be managed with the use of expedition tents.
The size of the tent you may require depends upon how many of you are there as campers. You need to take into consideration the season. Sometimes the larger tents are partitioned into separate sleeping areas.
